It is the dawn of a new Millennium, and we introduce a new idea in postgraduate Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery. We are coming under intense scrutiny from the public and the Government of our skills, our knowledge, and our ability to perform. Formal recertification is not far away and it has become the responsibility of every practising Orthopaedic Surgeon to keep abreast of the times. In this difficult climate, CME Orthopaedics will endeavour to bridge the gap between clinical practice and academia to give clear up-to-date educational messages in our specialty.

To support our educational mission, the authors have provided multiple choice questions after each article. This is a formula that we shall maintain in future issues and one which we hope will provide educational feedback to our readers.

Over the last year, as the idea of this new journal was being developed, the Editorial Board has been busy in securing the view of experts in their field and in fostering debate. Certainly the articles in this issue should provide grounds for learned discussions.

We are keen for CME Orthopaedics to become a postgraduate forum of ideas, and correspondence is therefore most welcome, as are single patient case reports with a clear educational message. We welcome any comments on CME Orthopaedics, and correspondence on areas close to our heart such as surgical training and service provision.
