Description
Over the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in the use of bone grafting in orthopaedic surgery. Although the history of bone grafting goes back at least 400 years, it is only in the last few years that some understanding of the biological processes that occur after implantation of bone graft has been gained. Different types of graft are best suited to different procedures, and increasing understanding of the underlying molecular processes may in the future allow enhanced stimulation of bone production.
