Description
Avascular necrosis of the femoral head is a disease of enormous importance affecting predominantly the young population. It accounts for about 12% of the total hip joint replacements performed. Despite being known for over a century and causing such morbidity, this entity still awaits a treatment. The uncertainty in a precise treatment plan has resulted in numerous management options being presented in literature with variable claims. We present an up to date review of literature for management of early osteonecrosis of femoral head. The review examined most of the modalities of treatment available. Few of them are well established, such as core decompression, bone grafting, osteotomies and limited resurfacing arthroplasty, while others are either still in a developmental stage or too recent to have received extensive evaluation.
