Description
The Calman reforms in United Kingdom postgraduate otolaryngology
training were implemented in 1996. Anecdotally there have
been concerns that these reforms have had a negative impact
on trainee and trainer research effort. This review is based
on the United Kingdom authorship findings of hand page reviews
of all issues of 10-15 English language otorhinolaryngology
journals over the last 15 years. The leading authors and city
of origin of published research is reported.
The department of origin or corresponding author was based
in 1 of 6 cities for half of the published otolaryngology
research both before and after the implementation of Calman
training. Seven authors in the pre-Calman and 4 in the Calman
era accounted for 10% of the published work.
The Calman reforms have not reduced United Kingdom published
otolaryngology research output. The relative reduction in
the ranking of otolaryngology trainees in publication output
tables is not conclusive
