Description
The management of congenital atresia of the exernal auditory
canal and associated microtia has changed since the advent
of osseointegration in the last 10 to 15 years. The assessment
of children born with congental ear malformations should be
carried out by a multidisciplinary team used to dealing with
the management of these conditions. Hearing assessment during
the first days of life is required to identify children with
bilateral hearing loss so that early hearing rehabilitation
will lead to a normal speech development. The surgical management
will be directed to restore hearing, by means of anchored
hearing aids or tympanoplastic techniques, and cosmesis, using
bone anchored auricular prostheses or auricular repair with
autogenous costal cartilage graft.
