Description
The WHO considers morphine to be the preferred strong opioid for cancer pain. However, it is widely accepted that about 15-20% of patients do not respond to morphine, and a smaller percentage finds the side effects intolerable; therefore it is clearly to the advantage of doctors and patients to have an effective alternative. Hydromorphone, which is listed in the WHO Guidelines for Cancer Pain Treatment, provides an alternative opioid for those patients intolerant or unresponsive to oral morphine.
