Description
Neuropathic pain can be a difficult management problem for which a number of different therapeutic agents, such as opioids, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, NMDA receptor antagonists, are used, with varying degrees of success. Suboptimal analgesia and troublesome side effects frequently limit the usefulness of currently available drugs. Neuropathic pain is a diverse and heterogeneous syndrome. Therefore it seems likely that the future management will involve the selective use of a combination of agents, which specifically target the different pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the syndrome.
