Developments in technology have led to the introduction of four new low vision devices; Flipperport, Jordy II, Maxport, and NuVision. These portable, electronic devices operate on similar principles to closed circuit television systems. They consist of a camera (head-mounted, stand mounted or handheld) which displays an image on a microdisplay headset. The devices have the facility to provide a range of magnification at different working distances, as well as the ability to manipulate the images in terms of colour, contrast and brightness. This review aims to describe the individual devices, their features and their methods of use. The potential benefits and disadvantages of these new devices compared with conventional low vision aids is discussed.
