Should tinnitus be a primary indication for Carotid Endarterectomy?

Description

Carotid artery stenosis can lead to the development of
strokes or even blindness. Treatment of severe or
symptomatic stenosis is by carotid endarterectomy. Intrusive
pulsatile tinnitus is one of the less common symptoms of
stenosis. We present a case of a seventy year old woman with
moderate carotid stenosis whose only symptom is tinnitus.
Carotid endarterectomy has been reported to cure tinnitus in
two case reports. We debate whether tinnitus should be a
primary indication for endarterectomy.
