Description
Orbital complications of sinusitis can occur at any age
but are most prevalent in the paediatric population. Orbital
and peri-orbital infections can be caused by a variety of
bacterial, fungal and parasitic agents. In order of frequency
orbital complications are likely to occur following ethmoiditis,
maxillary sinusitis and frontal sinusitis. Management of a
child with orbital complications of sinusitis requires a
multidisciplinary team including a paediatrician, an
otolaryngologist and an ophthalmologist. Early diagnosis
and prompt investigations and treatment are essential to
avoid visual loss and potentially death
