Description

This observational study describes an initiative instigated by East Kent Health Authority (EKHA) to support the implementation of the British Thoracic Society Asthma Guidelines in twenty practices whose prescribing data suggested that they might be experiencing problems providing optimal asthma care. EKHA commissioned a commercial organisation to provide in-house support as part of a package of care. An intensive educational programme was provided for the general practitioner and practice nurse by an accredited training organisation. Prescribing data improved during the course of the programme with increased emphasis on the use of preventative treatment. Subjectively the practices appreciated the multifaceted approach of the programme.
