Description

Achieving the national standards of breast cancer screening programme is challenging to many health authorities, especially those in inner cities. The three Boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham, in inner South East London have a low uptake rates for mammography. The main objective of this ecological study is to assess the role of travel time in determining whether women attend for breast cancer screening among women aged 50-64 invited for screening between 1994 and 1997.

No clear correlation was found even among more deprived wards. It was concluded that travel time had no significant impact on uptake of breast cancer screening in inner city areas.
