Description
Gonioscopy enables evaluation of the iridocorneal angle and detailed inspection of the structures within the anterior segment of the eye. It has been described as an integral part of any complete ophthalmic evaluation. At present mainly ophthalmic specialists in eye casualty departments and those specialising in diabetes and glaucoma tend to use it. However with the advent of shared care schemes, both in the care of diabetics and glaucomatous patients, and with a view to optometrists becoming involved in the management of anterior segment disorders, it is a technique which many practitioners will need increasingly to become familiar with.
Unfortunately, techniques for viewing the anterior chamber angle can initially seem rather difficult. The aim of this CE article is to describe the salient structures of the anterior chamber angle first, and the use of gonioscopic techniques in their examination in part 2 to be published at a later date.
