Description
Macular dystrophies are an uncommon heterogeneous group of inherited bilateral retinal disorders. Although there may be some degree of widespread involvement of the retina, the macular dystrophies are so called because of their chief effect on macular function. The following article discusses the clinical features, specialist investigations and genetic basis of those dystrophies that predominantly present during childhood. Although a detailed discussion of cone-rod and rod-cone dystrophies is beyond the scope of this article, a brief summary of the pure cone dystrophies is also presented.
