National guidelines for the management of acute upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage (AUGIH) were first published in 19921. Later that year a national audit project was initiated under the auspices of the British Society of Gastroenterology, the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal College of
Physicians of London and the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. Data were collected on a total of approximately 6000 cases during two prospective audit periods between 1993 and 1995 making it by far the largest ever study of its kind on this subject. This article is an overview of the published results of the national audit.
