We all have our own ways of managing patients with functional symptoms. I aim to build on these personal methods rather than replace them with a theoretical framework: to combine experience and new ideas. However, there are two overriding rules that must be followed:
- the patient must believe an adequate assessment has been made to be sure the doctor is able to correctly diagnose functional symptoms and
- the patient must believe that the doctor believes that the symptoms are real.
