The discovery of H.pylori over 10 years ago has revolutionised the management of peptic ulcer and has had a profound affect on our understanding of foregut disease. This article aims to update the gastroenterologist on recent advances in the field of H.pylori with particular reference to clinical management. The preschool child is at greatest risk of primary infection whereas newly acquired infection rates in adults are low. Non-invasive and invasive diagnostic tests are now available, choice of test depends on the clinical circumstances. The recent Maastricht Consensus Report has made a number of recommendations regarding eradication treatment based on the available evidence and expert opinion. One week proton pump inhibitor triple therapy is the treatment of choice for H.pylori eradication in most situations.
