In the first part of ‘How I Teach Trainees to Manage Functional Gut Symptoms’ I proposed that an understanding of the processes that influence referral of patients with functional symptoms to secondary care will improve the outcome of the consultation. Addressing this ‘consultation agenda’, explaining symptoms and reassuring the patient maybe all that is required of the gastroenterologist.
