Description
Acute laryngotracheobronchitis (croup) is the commonest
cause of acute airway obstruction in children and historically
epiglottitis has been the second most common cause. A systematic
review of the evidence regarding effective treatment of croup
with corticosteroids is presented and a treatment protocol
recommended. The changing epidemiology and microbiology of
acute epiglottitis since the introduction of the Haemophilus
influenzae type b vaccine are examined and their relevance
for further management discussed.
