Description
The visual field regulations for drivers in the UK are open to some degree of interpretation. This article discusses the process of decision-making for visual fields submitted to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, and shows examples of visual fields in three main areas, namely glaucoma, lasered diabetic retinopathy and retro-chiasmal field defects. Interpretative questions arising from these examples are discussed, including: the definition of significant relating to a central binocular scotoma; the definition of meridian relating to the European Directive regulations; the permissibility of longstanding visual field defects; and the problems of bitemporal field defects. Visual field quality issues are discussed, including false positive rates and repeated attempts.
