Spectacle frames have come a long way since the days of materials such as casein and cellulose nitrate. Derived from milk, the former tended to shatter when dropped in cold weather. The latter had the particularly undesirable property of tending to burst into flames when heated for adjustment! In this article, some of the properties of current frame materials are discussed.
