Description
Bilateral AMD causes irreversible visual impairment, which almost invariably leads to reading disability. The use of acuity reserve and contrast reserve in delivering traditional rehabilitation (in the form of magnification and improved illumination) is described along with their limitations in cases where there is central visual field loss. The disruption to the normal pattern of reading eye movements and comprehension, which can be caused by central field loss, is described, and alternative rehabilitation approaches discussed.
