Description

Despite no change in the prevalence in back pain over the years, there is a rising trend of chronic back pain disability in the United Kingdom and other industrialised nations. Psychosocial factors predispose to an increased risk of chronicity and the modern health care system has failed to prevent disability and distress associated with the chronic pain syndrome. Early behavioural management of acute and recurrent low back pain is advocated as a secondary preventive measure. The intervention of choice for chronic back pain is a cognitive behavioural multidisciplinary pain management programme.
