Description

The recent introduction of two anti-tumour necrosis alpha drugs, and the likelihood of further similar agents within the next 12-18 months, offers hope for more effective treatment for those patients with more resistant rheumatoid arthritis. Abstracts presented at the recent Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Rheumatology in San Francisco suggests that these agents have even wider therapeutic indications, including psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and vasculitis. These advances, together with the increasing threat of ‘orthopaedic physicians’ (who have no recognised training ladder), means that it is most important that we continue to use our expertise in the treatment of those patients with non-inflammatory regional pain problems. This issue therefore includes excellent articles on the management of neck pain and also the use of different imaging modalities in patients with groin pain.

Articles on the treatment of juvenile arthritis, Sjögrens syndrome, Calcium Pyrophosphate arthritis, and Henöch Schonlein Purpura in adults complete this issue of CPD Rheumatology. Do remember that the Editorial Board welcomes the submission of articles from non-commissioned sources, eg trainees. If accepted for publication, such articles will be published conventionally, on the Journal’s website, and cited in Embase and Excerpta Medica.
