Description
Psychoanalytic approaches explore aspects of human behaviour
which cannot be fully accounted for by conscious processes
and motivations. They can be applied to organisations as well
as individuals, and may be used as a tool by organisational
consultants. The theoretical concepts of primitive defensive
mechanisms of projection and splitting are particularly useful
in thinking about groups and organisations. The concepts discussed
are illustrated with examples taken from within public health.
Understanding gained from the application of psychoanalytic
approaches can suggest interventions to address problems or
assist development. Arguments are presented that psychoanalysis
may sometimes offer useful ways forward for public health
practitioners.
