Description
Amblyopia has a prevalence of ~2.5% based on the usual criteria of a visual acuity of 6/12 or worse in one eye and >1line difference in visual acuity between the two eyes. The effect of varying the amblyopia criteria on the apparent prevalence is discussed. Recent improvements in acuity measurement make it timely to consider the appropriateness of present definitions and whether other criteria for amblyopia may better designate those groups requiring clinical intervention.
