This article gives a brief history of how presbyopia became recognised as being different from ametropia. It plots the history of theories surrounding the mechanisms of presbyopia and how it varies with age. The development of corrections for presbyopia, from simple plano-convex lenses to the modern multifocal designs are also discussed.
