This paper deals primarily with the optometrists role in the low vision rehabilitation of children with visual impairment, although mention is made of the part played by other disciplines. The emphasis is on children without other impairments. Epidemiology is briefly discussed. The way in which children with low vision differ from adults is described and the main interventions are considered according to age group; 0-5 year olds (infants and pre-schoolers), 5-10 year olds (primary school), and 11 (the secondary school years).
