Description
After a decade of reform and reorganisation, optometrists relationship with the NHS is developing through PCTs and the clinical governance agenda. Despite the governments emphasis on national standards, the health service is developing in different ways in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. PCTs are key organisations, carrying out a range of functions performed previously by PCGs and health authorities. Commissioning and planning of services has moved to a three year cycle, with funding set to follow the patient. Major initiatives include NHS Direct, DTCs, and Foundation Hospitals. NHS LIFT offers opportunities to develop primary care premises.
