Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystem disease of unknown aetiology which is remarkable not only for its diverse clinical
manifestations but also for its potential effects on the nervous system. As far back as the 1870s, Kaposi described the first patient with neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE) who developed stupor and coma. Since then, and Hargraves’ description of the Lupus Erythematosus (LE ) cell in 1948, which revolutionised the diagnosis of SLE, many studies have emphasised the varied neuropsychiatric (NP) presentations associated with SLE.
