Description

Inflammation is associated with the classical cardinal signs of pain (produced by stimulation of nerve endings), redness and heat (both from vasodilatation and increased metabolism), and swelling (caused by the accumulation of intracellular fluid, fibrin and inflammatory cells). All of these mechanisms are at work in inflammatory diseases of the anterior part of the eye.
