Hypoparathyroidism in chronic renal impairment

Author(s): T Likhari & P Giles

Description

A 61-year-old female, a recent immigrant from
India, was referred to the renal clinic because of
chronic renal impairment. She gave a history of pain
in the left loin and upper abdomen, intermittent
pyrexia for a few weeks, and passage of a stone per
urethram in the recent past. Unfortunately, she had
passed the stone while abroad and stone analysis was
not performed. Other symptoms were nausea,
heartburn, indigestion, anorexia, constipation,
weakness and generalised aches and pains. She
received treatment for a confirmed Escherichia coli
urinary tract infection; subsequent urinary testing
was clear. In the past she had received treatment for
tuberculosis for two years in India. Physical
examination and abdominal ultrasound were
unremarkable.
