Description
Vitamin D is a pro-hormone which requires metabolism by the liver and kidney to form the active metabolite. It maintains serum calcium in concert with parathyroid hormone (PTH) within the physiological range by its effects on the small intestine, bone and kidneys. Even though there is controversy over thresholds for vitamin D deficiency, insufficiency and sufficiency, it is increasingly apparent that deficiency is common particularly in the elderly. This condition is known to have significant effects on bone turnover resulting in osteoporosis and osteomalacia, moreover there is evidence to suggest that it is also associated with impaired neuromuscular and psychomotor function. There is increasing demand for vitamin D assays and guidelines are necessary for appropriate use of tests and for diagnosis and treatment.
