Therapeutic drug monitoring Part 1: General principles and anti-epileptic drugs

Author(s): M. Hallworth

Description

Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) has an important role

in certain areas of therapeutics such as anticonvulsant and

antibiotic therapy, therapy with antidepressants and chemotherapeutic

agents and some drugs acting on the heart, respiratory and

immune systems. However, it is important to establish the

need for such monitoring, and to use plasma drug measurements

properly if the true benefits of TDM are to be realized. This

article discusses the general principles applicable to TDM

and illustrates them with reference to antiepileptic drugs.
