Description
A16 year old female was seen in casualty, late one night, complaining of severe epigastric pain associated with nausea. She was a non-smoker and claimed that she very rarely drank ethanol. She was on no medication apart from the combined oral contraceptive pill which she had recently started. In her past medical history she had been generally well apart from an appendix operation when she was 14 years of age although she did admit to frequent abdominal pains which got better if she avoided milk and cheese. Her family history revealed that her parents were cousins and that her father may have had a problem with ‘fats’ in his blood; a paternal aunt apparently had type 2 diabetes mellitus.
