Diabetes Mellitus is a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose levels due to a decrease in production or efficacy of insulin. It can result in damage to blood vessels of all sizes and can cause multi-organ damage. As the incidence of diabetes mellitus of all types increases,the optometrist will see an increasing number of patients with the disease. We must be aware of the factors which make it more likely a patient will progress and monitor each individual appropriately. This article discusses the types of diabetes mellitus,the risk factors for progression and briefly describes the types of diabetic maculopathy which threaten sight and may be amenable to argon laser treatment.
