Description

Individuals suspected as having chronic glaucoma account for a significant number of referrals from optometric practice. The last ten to fifteen years has seen a number of advances in the understanding of the early changes that occur during the glaucomatous process at the optic nerve head. The advent of indirect, binocular slit lamp examination with a high powered fundus lens enables the optometrist to assess the morphology of the optic disc in greater detail than was possible with the direct ophthalmoscope.

This article aims to update the reader in the science behind the art of optic disc assessment in the clinical arena.
