Molecular biology has changed the way we investigate the genetic mechanisms involved in squamous cell carcinoma development and progression. Several oncogenes have been studied in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCH& N) and these include ras, myc, c-erb B and PRAD- 1. The latter is part of an amplicon or unit of amplification, comprising the oncogenes bcl-l, ins-2, hst- 1 and PRAD- 1 (Figure 1).
