Positron emission tomography (PET) is now becoming a well-established and powerful imaging modality particularly in oncology. The combination of small positron emitting isotopes, which can be incorporated into biogenic molecules, together with PET camera technologies, allows highly sensitive quantitative functional imaging. There is strong evidence for the use of PET in an increasing number of oncologic settings: lung carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, primary brain tumours and many others. This review will examine the current indications and supporting data with regard to PET in oncology together with illustrative cases.
