Description
Squamous cell carcinoma of the breast is a rare condition. It occurs as a complication of chronic benign squamous metaplasia in benign breast conditions or as extensive and prominent squamous metaplasia in infiltrating duct carcinoma. It is necessary to exclude the presence of metastases from an extramammary primary or a possible occult primary on detailed clinical assessment, investigations and follow-up. Due to variability in spread to the lymph nodes an axillary staging procedure is usually necessary. Treatment is often multimodal but the precise nature of adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy needs to be defined.
