Case Report: Folie a Deux -A Treatment Dilemma

Author(s): Cathey Dukes

Description

A, 72 years and B, 77 years were two spinsters,
always close who bought a flat together on
retirement. They had been born and brought up
in Ireland and had come to England in their 20’s.
A had been a school cook whilst B was a retired
nurse and had always been the more dominant of
the two. A had controlled angina for which she
took GTN and Atenolol. Two years prior to
presentation A developed psychotic symptoms
believing that the occupants of a neighbouring
flat had injected her with a needle whilst out
shopping. They began persecuting her by
following her when she was out and causing her
to suffer a number of physical symptoms with the
use of laser beams which they shone into her flat.
She developed a complex delusional network and
although B was not affected she believed her
sister’s reports. Nine months later B developed
similar symptoms and a month after this the
delusions forced them to move out of their flat.
