Abstract

There is little formal training in service development available to higher trainees in psychiatry. Consultants are expected to be able to develop the services in which they work. Applying basic principles of service development facilitates the introduction of change. An example from a clinical service where such principles were applied to a development are described. Such experience is valuable for specialist registrars who are expected to gain an understanding of various aspects of management as part of their higher training.
