It is surprising that, despite the large numbers of septoplasties performed, there are very few reports on the aesthetic outcome of the procedure. This is a prospective study with a good follow up period and is one of only a handful that addresses this issue. It demonstrates that the risk of aesthetic changes, in cases performed by consultant surgeons in a University hospital in the Netherlands is not inconsiderable. This should have major implications on the preoperative assessment and consenting of patients undergoing septoplasty in the UK, the vast majority of which I suspect are performed by sub-consultant grades.
