Adenocarcinoma of Ampulla of Vater in a Patient with Down’s Syndrome

Description

Background: Down’s syndrome is associated with a number of malignancies and gastrointestinal conditions. There are no previous reports of adenocarcinoma of ampulla of Vater in patients with Down’s syndrome.

Patient: A young (twenty six year old) man with Down’s syndrome was admitted for investigation of jaundice, vomiting and pyrexia. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography confirmed dilatation of the biliary tree with an abnormal ampulla. Histology from ampullary biopsies showed adenocarcinoma.

Conclusions: This is the first report of adenocarcinoma of the ampulla of Vater in a patient with Down’s syndrome.
