Comprehensive
Management of Head
and Neck Tumours

This second edition will already be familiar to most
readers with any head and neck interest. It draws almost
exclusively on a North American authorship, but one
cannot overlook the masterful contribution of one David
Howard to represent the UK view of controversies in
management of tumours of the pharynx ! Nearly 2000
pages of close print makes a superb reference work, but
not an easy bed-time or last minute revision read.
Illustrations are black and white throughout and, especially in reproducing scans, show excellent definition.
The first 15 chapters cover the basic science of head
and neck cancer, including topics such as pain control,
nutrition, molecular biology and even statistics and
economic/outcome issues. A nice surprise for this
otologist was then some excellent reviews of skull base
tumours such as chemodectomas and even “acoustic” (sic)
schwannomas.
This is indeed very wide ranging, covering
granulomatous and lymphoproliferative diseases and
paediatric tumours in the final chapters.
Truly the standard reference book for any department
training head and neck surgeons, (and a useful revision for
those of us who have to conduct examination vivas in a
field where we might feel “rusty”.) An essential for the
library, at least. Good old Stell and Maran still has prettier
pictures though and is easier to lift!
