Description
This review discusses the definition of selective IgA deficiency (IgAD) and the clinical relevance of circulating antibodies to IgA. These antibodies are usually of the IgG class and can cause anaphylactic reactions following blood transfusion or immunoglobulin therapy. However, there is a poor correlation between levels of antibodies and reactions. There is no consensus on the best techniques to measure these antibodies, and what level of antibody constitutes a serious risk of anaphylaxis.
