This review defines rhinitis and discusses the diagnosis and treatment. This is a common condition with significant effects on quality of life, and is best managed by clinicians trained in allergy with additional experience in nasendoscopy. Most patients are allergic to aero-allergens, the diagnosis being confirmed by skin prick testing. Nasal challenge tests may be needed if there is doubt and the presence of eosinophils on nasal smears can be useful to confirm an allergic reaction. Successful management usually depends on a combination of allergen avoidance, local steroid preparations, and sometimes desensitising immunotherapy.
