Staphylococcal Infection

Description

Dear Editor,

In case report: chronic staphylococcal infection, CPD Bulletin, Immunology and Allergy 1999; 1(1): 24 25, Sarah Deacock gives an account of the investigation of a patient with recurrent staphylococcal infection.

In my own experience, chronic staphylococcal infection is something I occasionally get asked to see and for which I have rarely found an underlying immunological explanation. In these cases, on the assumption that it is caused by a particularly virulent strain of staphylococcus, I have in conjunction with the Microbiologists in Plymouth and Exeter, put together a decolonisation regimen. We have used this now in approximately ten patients, and in approximately 50% have had complete success. I enclose a copy of the protocol in case colleagues may wish to try it.

Sincerely,
