Description
CME is part of the process of lifelong learning that all doctors undertake from medical school until retirement, and has traditionally been narrowly viewed by the medical profession in terms of knowledge update. However, all career grade doctors and scientists (including consultants, locums, associate specialists, staff grade doctors and clinical assistants) need skills that extend beyond updating their medical or scientific knowledge in order to survive and practice effectively in the modern NHS. These include a wide range of activities such as management, education training, IT and audit, communication and team building skills. This broader approach is called Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and was endorsed by the Academy of Royal Colleges in April 1999.
