Description

In the UK, patients with Behet’s disease are increasingly being referred to Immunologists. The laboratory has a somewhat marginal role in diagnosis and monitoring. HLA typing, antibodies to endothelial cell antigens and cellular responses to a range of auto-antigens are research tools with unproven clinical utility. Lack of good evidence of response to drugs and heterogeneity of responses makes Behet’s disease difficult to manage. Current guidelines support the role of an accessible, multi-disciplinary team in managing this disease.
